Summer is here...

Thursday, May 08, 2008

...and chainsaws are buzzing. Can't you hear them? No? Is it just me? Oh well... A script I wrote has made it to film: Mal Woolford directed the short film ARK earlier this year, produced by Andrea Thornton and starring Simone Lahbib and Raffaello Degruttola. It is in post-production now - expect it to be released some time this year. It's dark. It's moody. It's short... I am writing a new novel for Serpent's Tail. Expect it next year. Say no more... Enough about me. What about that buzzing? Are you sure it's not chainsaws?

More foreign stuff

Thursday, February 21, 2008

Not much going on book-wise on the home front, so it's all overseas just now. Which is great, because I do like a bit of travel. And travelling I will be, to Brussels on the 6th of March for the Book Fair. Details here... The French edition of Fags and Lager is released by Série Noire/Gallimard on the 5th of March. Check out the cover and consider purchasing it, if you will... That is all. Rock on.

Foreign news and other stuff

Monday, November 19, 2007

Been a while since I updated here. Of course, if you were savvy you would know to check the blog, which is updated much more frequently. Onto the news... Foreign editions of DEADFOLK and FAGS AND LAGER out in Russia and Italy respectively. If anyone wants to know the status of the Royston Blake books (and the possibility of a fourth one), they should subscribe to my newsletter (above) because it's too TOP SECRET to put on here. I'll be sending out that info in a couple of weeks... Writing-wise, I have been working on a couple of short and feature-length film scripts with some great collaborators. More news on that if it pans out... Short story YOUR PLACE IS IN THE SHADOWS is due to be published by excellent magazine Crimewave. (Back in the day, I had a story called SOME HELP FROM STANLEY in their sister publication The Third Alternative)... That's all I can think of. Don't forget to sign up to the newsletter and check the blog.

Overhaul and France

Wednesday, February 21, 2007

Happy new year to all readers of this site! A bit late but there you go. I've given this place a mild overhaul, as you may or may not notice. Can I draw your attention to the thing above for joining my mailing list? Do you fancy doing that? Go on. Please?... I will be attending the Quais du Polar noir festival in Lyon, France this year. It's March 30th to April 1st and there will be some exciting guests there (check events page). The Gallimard release of LES ALLONGÉS (Deadfolk) will be out in France by then... Hopefully I will have some news for English-speaking connoisseurs of all things Mangel in the near future.

Italy

Sunday, September 10, 2006

MORTACCI is the Italian edition of DEADFOLK, and it comes out next week on September 12 from Baldini Castoldi Dalai. (Tranlsated by Massimo Bocchiola.)

If you are Italian, or just fancy reading a book in Italian, check it out please!

RIP comedian/footballer Charlie Williams

Sunday, September 03, 2006

Just to clarify, I am not him. I loved the guy as an entertainer but I have no contact with his family and cannot get messages to them. I am just a humble and poorly-paid novelist who happens to share the name. Anyone who wants to say something about my illustrious namesake, can I suggest you have a look at this BBC page where you can leave your thoughts. The world is a more humdrum place without him, that's for sure. But think of the laughs!

The Sun Is Out

Friday, June 02, 2006

Hey, here I am again. I've done some v.minor changes to this site, but nothing groundbreaking. Maybe I should break some ground here. Maybe it's time to overhaul the whole thing. Ah, sod it. To the news... I have sold some new short stories. FIVE BAGS OF BILLY goes to the new crime mag Murdaland (issue #2). KING SHIT goes to Bullet (issue #6 - already out, I see). YOUR PLACE IS IN THE SHADOWS goes to the Allan Guthrie-edited Best New Noir. (Those three stories are linked, in that order. Actually I need to write another to link up KING SHIT and YOUR PLACE...) And SWEET AND TENDER HOOLIGAN goes to the Peter Wild-edited Paint A Vulgar Picture, which is an anthology of stories inspired by songs by The Smiths. Also I sold a flash story SON OF BOB to the Peter Wild-edited antho The Flash... No more news just now. Anyone going to the Harrogate Crime Writing Festival in July (my event is on the Friday), I'll see you there. Buy me a drink, please... And remember, check the blog for more regular blatherings.

Check Your Head

Friday, March 24, 2006

I am really crap at updating this website. You might want to read the last news item below, which was meant to go out a while back. Hopefully all the missing files are restored here. If not, I give up... A great interview with me, conducted by Ray Banks, can be found in the latest Noir Originals. He asks great questions, I go on at length about the Mangel books... FAGS AND LAGER did not win the Lefty award, which went to Peter Guttridge for his CAST ADRIFT. But hey, there's always the Nobel Prize for Literature. And I had a nice time at Left Coast Crime anyway.

Etc

Sunday, March 5, 2006

KING OF THE ROAD is out in the shops. Hopefully you will find it somewhere if you're inclined to look for it, which I do hope you are (otherwise there's always here). I've not been able to find all the reviews so far but I've put four up here... Fancy a quick read? Check out BROKEN GLASS, a flash fiction piece I did at Tribe's Flashing In the Gutters site (and check the many others there too). I'm not online right now so I can't find the exact link to my story, but I'm sure you can... Next event is the Left Coast Crime convention in Bristol, March 16-19. I will be on a couple of panels alongside such worthy folk as Greg Rucka, Peter James, Jason Starr, Allan Guthrie, Ray Banks, and Donna Moore... Hey, FAGS AND LAGER has been nominated for a Lefty award, which is for funny crime novels. Come on Fags!... Remember to check the blog for a day-by-day drip feed of utter crap. (OK, more like week-by-week.)

Events etc

Friday, January 13, 2006

The launch for KING OF THE ROAD will be at Ottakars in Worcester on 9th February, 6:30-8:30. If you are anywhere around there, please do come... I will be attending Left Coast Crime in Bristol between 16th and 19th of March. There's talk of me doing some sort of panel there but it's all TBC... That's all for now. Hey - check the blog for minute-by-minute blatherings.

Long Time No Update

Wednesday, October 12, 2005

Misc news: French rights to FAGS AND LAGER have been sold to Gallimard... I will be appearing at next year's Harrogate Crime Writing Festival... All going well, I will be launching KING OF THE ROAD in Februrary at the Worcester Waterstones. I haven't got around to putting up an extract of the book yet, but you can get an mp3 of me reading from it here (page down a tad)... Oh, and the Spanish version of DEADFOLK - entitled GENTE MUERTA - is out now from Factoria de Ideas of Madrid. So if you're Spanish, hola from me. Mine's a cerveza.

Stuff

Monday, August 08, 2005

Misc news: Spanish rights to DEADFOLK have been sold to Madrid publisher Factoria de Ideas... Just came back from Port Eliot Festival, which though rained out, was ace. Me and Rob Lewis's event was a bit ridiculous but we did our best, and it was a generous crowd. Read about it here... Hey, I got mentioned in a proper article (ie: not a review) in The Observer... Next reading event - the Green Man Festival, 20th August. This will be great, because Will Oldham is headlining.

No Swansea

Tuesday, June 21, 2005

My and Rob Lewis's event at the Dylan Thomas Festival in Swansea (June 23rd) has been cancelled. Sorry if you wanted to go.

Shorts

Friday, June 17, 2005

I've put up a new page with links to three of my short stories on it, plus info about my short story publications. The stories are not exactly for kids, as you can guess if you've read any of the novels. They've been published before, but once they get out there in print mags they tend to disappear, so I might as well share them here. Hope you like them.

Reviews etc

Friday, May 27, 2005

FAGS AND LAGER has been getting some good press in places like The Sun, Front, Birmingham Sunday Mercury, Metro, the BBC, and Charlie Stella's blog. I've put some of it here. Also I did an article about the writing of it for Crime Scene. Please read (and the other stuff there too).

FAGS AND LAGER/Media

Tuesday, May 10, 2005

FAGS AND LAGER, my second novel (and the second to feature Royston Blake and the town of Mangel) is published today. I will be doing a radio interview at 3pm on that day with Dave Bradley of BBC Hereford & Worcester. You should be able to pick it up here. Also look out for interviews in The Worcester Standard (if you're local), and Metro (national except London).

Readings, Foreign Sales, Stuff

Friday, April 22, 2005

My next event is at the Guardian Hay Festival, on 1st June, followed by the Dylan Thomas Festival in Swansea (23rd June). Check out the events page for details...

DEADFOLK and FAGS AND LAGER sold to Baldini e Castoldi in Italy and AST/Tough Press in Russia (and, earlier, DEADFOLK to Gallimard in France)...

FAGS AND LAGER is coming out on May 10, so hopefully it will be in a bookshop near you (in the UK). Failing that, it's here. I did a little background piece on it for the Serpent's Tail site. Also I've got off my arse and done a proper page for it here on this site..

(This is basically a round-up of bits of news that I've shared on my blog. It all appears there first (because it's easier and I'm lazy) so keep an eye on it, if you're interested. There's also a lot of junk and ranting on there, for which I can only apologise in advance.)

You Need a Bath...

Friday, February 25, 2005

...Bath Literature Festival, that is. Charlie Williams will be lining up alongside James Hawes, Niall Griffiths, and Desmond Barry at the Rondo Theatre on March 5th. Further details on the events page. Check out the other events there too, please.

Enough Is Enough (Is Enough)

Tuesday, January 25, 2005

This "news" page has got a little out of hand. Originally I just wanted to post news of things like reading events here - you know, the kind of stuff someone might want to see if they type in www.charliewilliams.net. However, as anyone will see who has come here recently, I have veered from that objective somewhat.

BUT VEER WILL I NO MORE.

From now on, this front page will be the newsy stuff aspired to above. All other outpourings will go in MY NEW BLOG. Oh yes. So check it out. Please.

PS: All the old "news" is archived here, should anyone want to see it.
